The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is a world class art museum and one of my favorite spots in Melbourne. It's a necessary stop if you're visiting! The majority of the exhibitions in the NGV are free, but they usually have one paid special exhibition on the ground floor. Throughout my visits/time living in Melbourne, I've seen Dalí, Andy Warhol, Ai Wei Wei, Van Gogh, David Hockney, and Degas exhibitions-- quite a line up!
The current special exhibition, the NGV Triennial, is free and features interactive pieces by artists from around the world.
One of my favorite ways to visit the NGV special exhibition is the "Friday night at the NGV" series, where they open the exhibition after hours with a live band, food, and bar. They usually hold this series on a block of Friday nights each season.
